The Cambridge Satchel Company is a British brand founded by Julie Deane and her mother Freda Thomas in 2008. The idea was born out of Julie’s love of her old school satchel and the disappointment in not being able to buy those kinds of bags anymore. Also intended to be a way to pay private school fees for Deane's children, Julie and Freda decided to recreate them. She had been looking for a durable, timeless schoolbag for her children, describing her goal bag as one the characters in Harry Potter would wear with their Hogwarts school uniform. Her colourful handmade leather satchels are all based on an original Oxford and Cambridge satchel design originally aimed at school children. However they saw unexpectedly high demand for the bag as a fashion accessory, which became, according to The Guardian, "a cult among twenty-something fashion bloggers". By 2011 they were making over 3,000 bags a week in the UK and selling to 86 countries. All of the bags are handmade in the Cambridge Satchel Company’s own workshop in Leicester in the UK. They are all 100% leather, and designed to stand the test of time and to be worn again and again. These classic bags also make a great gift.
