Duke & Dexter

Duke & Dexter

Duke & Dexter is a shoe brand for men and women with a goal is to fill a void in the marketplace for high quality, yet affordable slip-on shoes. The original concept behind the brand came from velvet slippers, but Duke & Dexter set up to create slippers that can be worn for dress up and down occasions, without the inflated price tag. The traditionally British shoe has been reinvented with the brand's contemporary designs - inspired by colour trends, patterns and imagery from around the world. Duke & Dexter targets individuals who value their wardrobe, fashion and distinct style, and appreciate fine quality without unreasonable price tags.

Duke & Dexter interview

Duke & Dexter is a shoe brand for men and women that aims to fill a void in the marketplace for high quality, yet affordable slip-on shoes.
The brand is renowned for their velvet slippers, but Duke & Dexter has managed to expand their designs to create slippers that can we worn from
casual to elegant occasions.

We were delighted to have a chat with the founder, Archie Hewlett, to find out a little bit more about himself and his luxurious brand.

1. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself, the brand, and where you draw inspiration from?

I launched Duke & Dexter after having recognised a gap in the market for a traditional British shoe, which also promotes contemporary style whilst remaining affordable, functional and foremost luxurious. I’ve had the luck to build an international following alongside a celebrity clientele base including Ryan Reynolds, Justin Timberlake and Eddie Redmayne to name a few. At the moment we are re-focusing our brand to further emphasise who we are as a company; cool, minimalist and relevant.

Marrying global inspiration with British charm, I gather inspiration from travels and experiences, consistently releasing new collections, which play with an array of colours, textures, prints and motifs.

2. Are there any new design techniques or fabrics that you’ve introduced for the first time with your latest products?

We’ve just changed our production channels to England and have discovered a bunch of new fabrics. We also experiment with fabrics used in older collections and rework with them to create new interesting styles. We’ve actually just created a line in nubuck, which is a cowhide leather that has rubbed on the outside to feel like suede. It looks stunning and has a really smart finish, so definitely a wardrobe essential for this summer.

3. What countries are you currently manufacturing in? Are they specific to your company’s image?

As mentioned before, we currently made the switch to manufacture in England. This is to further signify our heritage, whilst wanting to support the dying trade of British shoe craftsmanship. Here, at Duke and Dexter, our team hand makes each individual pair of shoe to ensure quality.

4. How would you describe your brand/products in one word?

Original.

5. Who is your product aimed towards? How would you describe your customer?

Our customer is fashion conscious, but more interested in their personal style and character rather than following the conventional. They like to look smart and appreciate excellent quality products, which are the most loved and timeless purchases.

Thank you Archie Hewlett for your time and insight on Duke & Dexter. We look forward to seeing new collections from your brand that keep breaking boundaries in the British shoe market.
