JEAN PAUL GAULTIER The inside view on L’Enfant Terrible’s work

This Monday THEN AND NOW was invited to the launch of the ‘The fashion world of Jean Paul Gaultier from the sidewalk to the catwalk’ at The Barbican Theatre in London. With the wait staff all dressed as Gaultier Sailors handing out champagne, the tone was set for the evening.

The exhibition is a retrospective of Gaultier’s 40 year career. With his avant-garde creations and cutting-edge designs, Gaultier has shaped the look of fashion and influenced pop culture over the last 40 years. His reputation for witty and daring designs and a ceaseless interest in both street and high culture has earned him a place in fashion history.

The exhibition extends on two floors and shows everything; from his early collections in the 1980’s to his iconic pieces worn by Madonna. A wing is solely dedicated to his muses and the outfits they have worn. Another independent wing is all about his work on the cult classic Eurotrash, with clips from the show rolling on the big screen as you sit in one of his car chairs.

Overall it was a very glamorous night and a fantastic exhibit; for any Gaultier fan or just any fashion enthusiast, this is not to be missed! Best memory of it? One of our buyers was looking at an outfit worn by Boy George, thinking how iconic it was, only to turn around and see Boy George himself talking to Jean Paul…Mon Dieu!

Want more exclusive news? Well, we’re proud to announce that THEN AND NOW will be carrying a unique selection of Jean Paul Gaultier’s FW14 accessories. Available on the site from this mid-summer…keep following us for updates, enfants terribles!
