Sharon Sacks is the founder of Sacks Productions, a company situated in Calabasas, California that specialises in the planning and production of events ranging from dinners to larger events around the world. They take care of all aspects of planning and execution; from brainstorming to the day of the event they make sure you are satisfied with every single detail.
We had the pleasure of chatting with Sharon and asked her a few questions regarding the origin of Sacks Productions and some tips she has for brides and grooms.
How did you first get involved in wedding planning?
I worked for a man in the entertainment industry for many years and had decided (with his support) to open my own company. He hired me to plan his wedding and it was an incredible event! The response from the guests was overwhelming. I loved the planning process and knew making “dreams” become a reality for couples was an industry I wanted to be a part of.
Why do you feel couples should hire a wedding planner?
A wedding planner can eliminate a great deal of stress for a couple. There are so many moving parts involved in putting together a wedding, and a planner is there to alleviate that stress for them. Additionally, a planner has relationships with various vendors, which can open many doors for the couple. They are experts in their fields and provide inside knowledge on all the “do’s and don’ts” that can save a couple time and money.
What are the steps you follow when starting to plan a wedding?
First and foremost, I set up a meeting with my bride and groom to discuss their vision for the day. Once we have established what their dream is, venue selection is first on the list. When that is determined, we bring in the designer, florist, caterer and music that are the best fit in helping them make their dream a reality.
How do you make sure brides effectively describe to you their vision for their wedding day?
When I meet with a bride and groom I have them bring in as many visuals as they can. I ask them not to limit themselves to only photos of florals or table settings but to think outside of the box. What architecture inspires them? What fashion do they love? What music do they listen to on their iPod? What are their favourite restaurants? In this discussion we try to focus on words that reflect the emotion they would like represented on that day. Weddings should be about the bride and groom as a couple and the feeling they would like their guests to have throughout the night.
What do you prefer to work with, a concrete idea and theme for a wedding or being given full creative liberty?
I like a little of both! If you have a theme, like Old Hollywood, Safari, Rock and Roll, I then work with my team within those parameters to create looks and experiences that are true to the bride and groom and something their guests have never experienced before.
What’s the most stressful aspect of planning a wedding?
After 30 years in the business I am fortunate to have put together a large group of vendors who I trust in their creativity, product and execution. I still get butterflies the day of the wedding but knowing that I have amazing people with me helping me in these otherwise stressful fields keeps my stress levels down. You always need to have great vendors!
What do you feel makes a wedding memorable?
Personal touches are key! Guests remember the parts of the wedding that are unique to that specific bride and groom. Adding a surprise element as well will have guests talking long after the wedding is over!
What is the advised time to start planning a wedding?
If the couple doesn’t have a location secured, and have a place in mind that is very sought after, they should look to book a year in advance. It is best to have that solidified and the rest of the planning can be done 6-9 months before the wedding. Fashion and design elements are always changing so it’s important to not plan too far in advance.
What is your favourite wedding season?
It depends on the location of the event. I love Aspen in the Winter, Italy in the Spring, Southern California in the summer, Mexico in the fall. Each location has its best time of year and that “perfect season” enhances the overall event.
What are your favourite flowers?
Peonies, Lilly of the Valley and Sweet Peas!
Is there a dream venue you’d like to book for a wedding/event?
Dolphin Island, which is one of the most exclusive private islands near Positano, Amalfi Coast and Capri. It would be a dream come true to book this island for an event.
Some quick tips for couples planning their own wedding?
Make it personal! Add special touches that are uniquely yours! Read all your contracts top to bottom and make sure all your vendors are insured. Bring a surprise element to the night! Don’t sweat the small stuff…this is a day to celebrate the love between you and your partner along with family and friends. It goes by fast so savour every moment!
