Iconic Fashion Moments in Film

Films have always paved the way for fashion inspiration. Browsing through Netflix we can think of some seriously iconic fashion moments that go back for years. The colourful 60’s, grunge periods of the 80s and of course who could forget the schoolgirl trends of the 90’s? Most of the biggest celebrities have their on screen outfits to thank for their memorability and recognised style. Keira Knightly, Anne Hathaway and Sarah Jessica Parker are just some of the names that come to mind. It’s no secret that film and fashion go hand in hand and if you’re like us, you can’t get enough of both. So to pay homage to the films that made us completely question our wardrobes, here are some iconic fashion moments in film.

Fashion Moments in Film – Clueless (1995)

Fashion Moments in Film - Clueless

This charming blonde knew how to wear the schoolgirl outfit to perfection. Clueless no doubt kick started the trend in the 21st century for us again. The signature look included a mini skirt or dress worn with an oversized jumper and some metallic ballet flats. This look reminds us of forgotten high school memories, not to mention it works as a great Halloween outfit! The key to the look is corresponding colours that work with one another. There is no reason this can’t be worn as an everyday look. Just change some features to reminisce on the 90’s, a longer skirt or some trousers with the oversized jumper for instance.

To recreate the schoolgirl look, we went for a mini skirt and an oversized jumper for a really chic understated outfit. Black, white, grey or navy are some colours that you can choose for a work outfit or a classy choice. Antipodium’s Rafia pencil skirt paired with a long cardigan and a blouse is so chic and simple. For an extra pop of colour and something a little different to go with the outfit, Imachic’s pink circus backpack is sure to draw attention. Usually with this look in the 90’s an open sandal with some socks would have been the staple. For a dash of modernity on a classic look try pairing these Millie lace flat shoes. The lace detail is so elegant and the colour scheme works with black tights or the notorious white long stockings.

Fashion Moments in Film – The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Fashion Moments in Film - The Devil Wears Prada

Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep received heaps of acknowledgement on their performances in the big screen adaptation of the best-selling book. Some of these props have to be awarded to the fashion displayed in the movie, particularly the pieces involved in Andy’s transformation. From the elegant white coat to the charming black dress with contrasting collars. There’s no forgetting the sailor themed outfit that resulted from the dramatic makeover one could only compare with Cinderella!

For the sailor themed look a wool finished blazer will emulate the one Andy wore so elegantly. Plakinger’s blazer with gold buttons serves as a cute addition when worn with a gold dress underneath. Thigh high leather boots could be an option, but for more of an understated vibe some black suede boots will work too.  Finish this look off with a statement gold necklace and you have Andy’s quirky style down.

Fashion Moments in Film – Annie Hall (1977)

Fashion Moments in Film - Annie Hall

This movie challenged the “women wear it better” philosophy with so much style that it became an everyday look. Migrating to the runways, the carefree style gave a whole new meaning to boring office wear. Slouchy waistcoats and long brown trousers with polka dot shirts, this retrospective has such a cool feel to it. Not to mention that it makes for a perfect work outfit or sophisticated look. It is actually very simple to recreate Annie’s looks, and there is definitely leeway to some modern touches. Even Alexa Chung quotes that one of the first characters she truly fell in love with was Annie.

THEN AND NOW shop is full of fashionable alternatives to recreate Annie’s menswear style including this sophisticated ensemble. The pastel looking beige trousers by See by Chloe have such a flattering and comfortable fit, perfect for pairing with countless tops and cardigans. For this outfit style them with a silk shirt with a cool toned print and a long black vest to emulate the waistcoat Annie loved. The longer length vest and absence of a tie is a modern take if you don’t intend on looking too smart. A relaxed look is even further achievable with these Mocassin flat-forms by Mybluchers.

Fashion Moments in Film – Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

Fashion Moments in Film - Breakfast at Tiffany's

Pearls and a little black dress were a match made in heaven and the fashionable motif for this old classic. The movie no doubt taught us some valuable style lessons we could not possibly ignore even if we tried to. Holly was the epitome of the Park Avenue princess. She showed us how to complete a look with the signature dark, large framed sunglasses. Yes, way before Kim Kardashian was even born. Besides how could anyone have a complete wardrobe without a little black dress?

To recreate one of the most famous looks with a modern touch you need a patterned dress. Plain and simple just doesn’t cut it anymore with this inspired fashion icon. So try styling this black floral brocade dress by Hemyca. The silhouette of the dress is flattering, highlighting your curves in all the right ways. For footwear De Siena’s Ophelie Decollete black pumps are the right addition… so classic. Of course we cannot forget the statement jewellery Audrey Hepburn rocked in the romantic comedy, a signature aspect of the look. For a modern twist keep the pearls but update them with these shiny courage earrings with the silver stud above. Add a pair of dark sunglasses and this look is complete. We’ve picked out this vintage pair by Christian Roth.

Fashion Moments in Film – Pretty Woman (1990)

Fashion Moments in Film - Pretty Woman

It may have been 26 years since this film graced the screens but from time to time we are still left in awe over Julia Roberts. So much so that we even forget how Pretty Woman managed to turn prostitution into a tale of sappy romance. Of course we couldn’t make this list without reminiscing on the style Vivian possessed in this feminist classic. Short suits and vintage white pantyhose were iconic, but the most memorable has to be the statement red dress. Who ever said good things couldn’t come from revenge shopping?

To recreate Vivian’s 90’s look, this nude coloured beaded dress is the right sort of elegant chic you need, especially this time of year. A key aspect of some of the long sleeved clothing in the 90’s was the popular padded shoulders to give a broader and more defined body shape. The beads on the dress are also a luxurious addition when worn with a pair of low heeled pumps. Colour combinations were not too crazy in this era so keep it quite mellow when it comes to your accessories. Panames & Co has the perfect Panama hat with a tan ribbon that matches with the dress and the shoes to work with the colour scheme. Finish this look off with a pair of long drop earrings, in gold of course!
