Day in the Life. Buying Intern, Trish Reynolds

Considering a career in fashion buying? Find out what it’s really like from our buying intern, Trish.

Here at THEN AND NOW, buying is a role where my daily schedule varies and I am never doing the same thing as the day before.  It is refreshing and exciting to know that each day holds something new!

Being a buying intern entails researching new brands and speaking to designers that we would like to collaborate with. This allows us to keep our site fresh with the latest collections and cool designers. It’s very much about networking – establishing great relationships with our current brands whilst forming relationships with new ones as well. But of course, exciting new designers do not appear in front of our desks – we wish it was that easy! Finding the best brands often comes from us getting out of the office and going to press events, tradeshows, and fashion shows to find truly unique brands that aren’t as mainstream.

Tradeshows like Scoop International, Stitch, and Jacket Required, which we most recently attended, are gateways to some fabulous collections. It also keeps us aware of trends to lookout for in the coming seasons. At fashion shows, we are also looking for these trends. Following the shows it is my job to create trend forecasting reports.  These reports allow our team to be prepared for the season ahead and ensure that everything we select for the site will be stylish and in sync with the trends of the season.

The press events, which we attend after work, are always different. These events are the best way to socialise with other people in similar positions. We hear about the latest news in the industry and spread the word about THEN AND NOW and our concept. Today’s digital world has really changed the way we work and how business is done. It sounds crazy, but in this industry there are many people who we deal with daily via email yet we have never actually met in person. These events eliminate that distance and allow us to put faces to names. I think the best part of my job is when we finally launch a new collection on to our site. It is the moment that all the work that I put into finding these new brands is finally paying-off! It is also very important that I really love what I do here at THEN AND NOW. It is impossible to reach your full potential if you don’t enjoy what you do!
